My first big conference as a PhD student is coming up and I am wondering what the decorum is for such occasions. Do I let people take a look at the poster and wait to be asked questions or should I try to start a conversation as they approach? Any advice?
Yes I agree with José, talk and explain the principles of your poster in very short time and allow more time for questions. The main purpose, especially you are PhD student, is to gain more feedback. More questions --> good to highlight the weaknesses of your poster/paper and as result improve the quality of your PhD thesis.
Make sure to poster is attractive and well designed. Attracting more people to see your poster and have discussion is good to gain more feedback. Good luck.
For poster presentations, you just stand by your poster waiting for audiences. If one or more come to you, you can start talking about your paper briefly and then give them space to ask questions.
First of all do not worry and be confident.
Thank you for the advice! I'd hope that most people that come and look at the poster are at least in the field, so they would mostly be familiar with the background of the research, I guess it should be more of a conversational presentation rather than scripted.
For a poster presenter it is very important the training for a short presentation; do this with your colleagues before departing to the conference. You must be able to explain your research and poster in two minutes. The visitor will pursue many posters and you must get the attention in a very short time. If you got it the visitor may decide to ask some interesting questions. A personal card with you name, affiliation and e-mail is mandatory to be distributed.

Poster Research
As this thread concerns posters, I would like to draw you attention to some research I am doing. As we can see, there is debate over the value of poster-presented information. I am conducting some interviews about people's views & experiences of conference posters. To participate, all you need is to be able to answer 'Yes' to the following question:
- Have you had direct experience of international Academic/Scientific conferences that use the poster medium ?
The interviews are conducted by exchanging questions & answers here on the Research Gate platform by private message. No one else can see your responses & you can write as much or as little as you like. No particular attention is given to language or presentation. We can either swap individual questions & answers (you can still ask things & expand like in a normal interview), or you can treat it like a survey & get all the questions at once.
