I am doing research on lentil and chickpea with relay cropping, zero tillage and conventional tillage with two different sowing dates. I want to calculate the moisture related extraction patterns for such pulses. So please suggest me whether the moisture content in soil will be more in surface layer or in 45 cm depth.
If the sol is at saturation, then the volume of water would be higher in the upper portion of the soil profile. However, the reverse is true if plant water use and or soil water evaporation has occurred. The soil moisture levels will need to be converted to plant available water to arrive at useable water data. This will depend upon the soil type as to the % of sand, silt and clay. Hope this helps.

It's best if you go out and obtain samples then measures soil moisture in drying experiments :)

It depends on the source of water. If it is rain, the moisture content will be high at the surface and less at 45 cm depth. If it is groundwater, by capillary, it will be less at the surface and more at deeper depths.
This is might be due to more deposition of organic matter at the surface because of the huge falling of the leaf litters mainly found in the case of pigeonpea pulse. it holds a high quantity of moisture upto 45cm and less loss of water due to dense crop canopy rather than other crops.
