How should we bridge the gap between industry and research?
Here is a list of questions for you to answer:
Do you agree that research is either conducted at a university level then applied in the industry or research is conducted in the industry and later it comes in education?
Do you agree that projects/ ideas that come from research are unsuitable for the industry because of various factors such as cost, market, material availability, feasibility, etc. or these factors are not a focus in the research sector?
Do you think the growth rate will be increased if researchers have industrial experience? the industry will have a more profitable business if R&D and encouragement for innovation is there like in research.
What should we do to bridge such gap between industry and research?
I would love to hear from you and know what you think!!
Article Scholarly Argument: Linking Doctoral Research to Practice
may be of interest. Leveraging the approach to critical thinking advocated by Paul and Elder (2008), the article makes a short argument for a research topic on linking doctoral research to practice to contribute new knowledge to the field and help address a real-world issue or opportunity.
Research is conducted in both industries and universities. Applied research is conducted often in the business and industries and the focus is on specific business process, product, or service to create a competitive advantage in the marketplace. The educational institutions focus both on common and broader issues facing the industries, and the quest is for more on the unknown than improving the process.
I agree with all your statements. Academic theory and research and business pracices are often not compatible. What to do? That's a difficult question...
