I am investigating implicit negative attitudes toward bullyng in a particular population. My plan is to run a ST-IAT. However, I am not sure how to deal with the fact that my target category (bullyng items) is by definition negative (unpleasant), which can lead with some confusion when participants are asked to categorize the mentioned items and the attribute items into the three categories (bullyng, positive and negative). In other words, it might be that as a result of its very negative nature, participants will easily mislead the target category (bullyng items) with the negative attribute category (negative but not bullyng/violence items). Does anyone has a suggestion on how to deal with this particularity? Thanks a lot!

It is obvious that bullying will demonstrate a significantly stronger implicit association with negative than with positive. This means there is no useful comparison (or conclusion) to be drawn about the implicit associations between bullying and positive versus negative. However, if the question is about the degree to which bullying is implicitly associated with positive and/versus negative, you may find variability between individuals which could be meaningful as a DV or it could be used as a predictor.
One thing you might want to consider is using a Go/No go Association Task (GNAT; Nosek and Banaji, 2001). This measure uses very short trial durations which means you can ensure the task is difficult enough to produce variability and be confident about the implicitness of the measure.

Do you mean solutions to bullying in the workplace? I think that's a question with enormous scope and the answer depends on, for example, the workplace and its culture, the policies and laws, leadership, support, etc. Do you have a specific case in mind?

Thanks both of you for the answers. Leah, we want to test whether implicit attitudes toward bullying are sensitive to the socioeconomic status of the kids. Of course, we assume that attitudes toward bullying are negative, but we want to test whether the degree to which bullying is implicitly associated with positive vs negative vary between the two samples (which differ in their socioeconomic status). I hope this clarify your question.

Ok, then this seems pretty easy. A simple bullying - goo/bad implicit association should allow you to see if there are differences (between subjects as a function of SES group - using ANOVA, or if SES is continuous you could use it as a covariate).

I believe there may be some deeper, cultural contexts to the variables you are attempting to measure. There may also be some gender specific linkages you are touching upon related to the ages of the children you are assessing. If you are looking at boys, it is not uncommon for boys to attempt to "prove" themselves out on the playground as the toughest or strongest by demonstrating "bullying" characteristics. Is this good or bad or is this a rite of passage from childhood to adulthood? Is it possible that you find bullying behavior in youth more commonly in non-white cultures than white cultures? A search of the literature may help you here.
