In routine laboratory testing, only the ABO and Rh typing are mostly tested. How these minor blood groups that are undetected may affect the health of the patient? Does it pose a major risk or it will not affect the physiologic state of the patient?
The other blood group antigens are not routinely phenotyped because of their lesser clinical importance. However, patients can develop antibodies resulting from exposure to these other antigens, either through transfusions or pregnancies or even naturally in some cases. Therefore, the search for antibodies is performed before red blood cell transfusion. To minimize the alloimmunization of polytransfused patients, phenotyping of antigens from other systems such as Kell, Kidd, Duffy, and MNS is recommended.
Could any casual blood cross contamination or blood born pathogens cause an increase in antibodies in Rh- individuals that damages red blood cells? Thoughts?
