Can WSPs alone be used for primary, secondary and tertiary wastewater treatment in rural areas or suburbs with 5000 - 20000 PE? Is it possible to produce biogas and digestate from WSPs as standalone plants? If yes, what features must be designed into such systems or the retrofits of traditional waste lagoons or ponds without AD capability? Are there established design guidelines to follow for these? I would appreciate if anyone can send me sample calculations for AD in WSPs.

I would tend to agree with Nidal. The water may im´prove some parameters, but will keep similar many of them and worse some others, like odours or methane contamination.
I am assuming that you are talking about black water, or sanitary grey water.
Otherwise, you shoud specify which water are you trying to treat.

Thanks, Alfredo. I am looking at treating combined municipal wastewater consisting of black water, sanitary grey water, stormwater and agricultural run off.
It also appears to me that in a single WSP , all types of treatments Primary, Secondary and Tertiary treatment can not be accomplished. But I can give you one example where this peculiar things are happening, that is in East Kolkata Wetland, a Ramsar site in India.

I would recommend oxidation ditches and maturation ponds for the sustainable handling of wastewater treatment in rural areas. maturation ponds are preferred due to the vast land space availability in the rural areas.
