To be sure, sustainability issues are not just important for developing countries, but also for develeoped countries. No question about this. Environmental issues do not know of geography.
Dear Donald, I get your point, I fully agree with you. Sustainability, in fact, has become more a matter of discourse than a valid and practical way of solving problems, I believe.
Frustration, pessimism usually makes the work of science a little bit more difficult, but living in poverty or in very polluted environments may you wonder about the miracles of sustainable development or sustainability and even of god.
But the world keeps going and science need to grow to fill our knowlege gaps and I believe that sustainability is the next step after sustainable development is declared a failure and the more we know about sustainability the better as as Carlos says sustainability thinking and acting is or it will be relevant to both develop and developed countries, even under pessimism.
As food for thoughts I will share with you bere this article:
Towards True Sustainability Step By Step Is Fine While There Is Time: Pointing Out The Unifying Nature Of True Sustainability With The Help Of The True Sustainability Wheel
Sustainability Issues are critically important to everyone. Poor countries have the least flexibility to address their concerns, and are the closest to being in an untenable situation where no solutions exist. But the key elements of all of the potential solutions are the same - reduce the obstructions within society that prevent people from meeting their needs (that's Human Development), reduce the disparity within communities toward the Biocapaicty of the community, use the resource that are available more efficiently, and access resources that are not currently being accessed. In Technologically rich communities, there is no real reason to focus on technological development, but in severely undeveloped communities it makes great sense. It behooves us to learn from the mistakes of others and ensure that the Technological Development is done in a manner that is Sustainable.
I've said before that Engineers have never really solved a problem, but rather have only changed them from one we understand a little to one we understand not at all. Poor communities will benefit from a lot of simple technological development, all of which can be Sustainable, if we want, and avoid those 'misunderstood' problems that technology has created.
