How off-stoichiometry reactant contribute to the secondary phase formation and lattice parameter changes for yields?

Any changes of stoichiometry for reactant would yield product with different properties. How to explain that this effect can contribute to the formation of secondary phase. At the mean time, it also contribute to the lattice changes of synthesized compound. The temperature and duration are fixed in this case.
