I just completed my doctorate, I live in Massachusetts, and I have 2 years of experience with evaluation in the social sciences. If I were to create an evaluation plan for an organization, how much should I charge per hour of work? My acquaintance has recently started a business and neither of us know how much to charge for evaluation. If possible, please leave a rough numerical range... even if it is just a guess. As you do in any job interview, let the employer name the price, fee, salary, etc. first. Then you can discus it, with a possible increase. In other words, let the employing party make the first move.
One of the things that makes this a difficult question is that there are so many variables involved. A few of them are the experience and education of the consultant, the content area of the evaluation, and country or area of the country where it will take place. Clearly, a consultant with little experience and a bachelor degree would not command the same fee as a consultant with a doctorate and 20 years of evaluation experience. Similarly, a project being evaluated in business or health might tend to command a higher fee than one in education or the social sciences. Finally, fee structures vary greatly from country to country and even among states in the USA. I am sure there are many more factors, but these come to mind almost immediately.

My point was that such a question could not really be answered precisely. Ultimately, it is up to a negotiation between the consultant and the contractor. I have done very little consulting in the health or business world, so I don't really have an answer for you. However, I suggest this for people starting out. That is to ask the contractor is they have a standard range they pay. After one gains some experience, they learn a reasonable range to ask.
