KM is usually studied at organisational rather than individual level. Yet, knowledge development starts in the head of an individual knowledge worker. Therefore, I would like to know how much research has been done in this area so far and whether this line of KM research should be increased in the future.
There is a rising interest in the concept of PKM (see https://www.amazon.com/Personal-Knowledge-Management-Organizational-Perspectives/dp/0566088924). However much of this work is sparse and unsurprisingly incoherent. I feel some of it is just old wine in a new bottle (repurposing old studies of org. KM), and KM researchers still fail to operationalize the concept using fresh empirical studies. This noted, I think an exception are studies of social media that represent them as platforms for PKM (e.g., Razmerita, Liana, Kathrin Kirchner, and Frantisek Sudzina. I believe that the theme of Personal knowledge is an important source of organizational knowledge management, because of the human resources contribute fundamentally and effectively to the achievement of all the goals of business organizations
Therefore, the subject of the management of personal knowledge is a subject that is tampered with by researchers within the organizational knowledge management
But not with the focus that your question is about.

I have just added my conference paper that deals with PKM. It is an exploratory study and therefore should be interpreted with caution. However, I hope that the paper may serve as a good starting point for further research in this largely under-explored area of KM.
Looking in the field of personal information management (PIM) could probably be interesting for your research I think. From a distributed cognition perspective, if you consider that knowledge are not only "in the head", but also distributed in the digital tools and external representations we use to communicate, work, etc.. there is clearly a link to be made between personal knowledge management and personal information management.
