I am research consultant at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. We are interested in the question of 'outsources' aspects of a thesis: data collection; data analysis; writing; editing....

At what point is the work no longer that of the student. With academics being under pressure to get students through, and students perhaps doing a higher degree to satisfy probation requirements, we see many PhD candidates being strategic in finding assistance for aspects of the research. Is this ethical? Acceptable?
