Nowadays organizing 'National' and 'International Conferences' has become a routine affair for almost all educational institutes. Most of these Conferences are poorly organized and are poorly attended. The quality of papers are also very low. The so called 'International Conferences' are attended by only local fellows. Most of the participants treat 'Conference' as a picnic.
The conferences are very useful to meet the colleagues, to discuss with them. They are essential to get some new ideas of research and to understand which directions of the research are growing and which are disappearing. As far as the papers are concerned, the good idea for the organizers, is to publish the papers after the meeting in a special issue of a journal with high impact factor.
Talks in conferences are really valuable. You may able to get new ideas. you can share your research problems by people who are in same area. you can increase contacts and even after talking to all of them self confidence is also increases. and I think now these days citation matters than impact factor. If your paper is good it will be surely citated.
I guess, conferences are important part of research and academia. It gives you chances for connectivity, resources and opportunities. Also meeting with fellow-mates
can be boon as far flourishing new ideas are concerned.
As far the 'picnic' aspect of conferences are concerned, I would say, there is nothing wrong in social gathering, here you can say it is sort of science of tech gathering.
Totally agreed with my colleagues. I would nevertheless add that there 'conferences' and 'Conferences'. Some A* ranked, some unranked (even unknown!). Then depending on the conferences chosen to publish, the citation, IF and so on provide different added value!
I agree with you. However, the live feedback we receive after the presentation is very useful for researchers. Again there's a problem about the number of spectators & their knowledge in the field. I observed that most of the participants present their paper & leave without listning to other presenters.
Another importance is that reseachers can connect with others working in the same field. It is important for international collaborations.
Conferences serve their own purposes. The interactive environment which a conference provides is very beneficial for the young researchers. They get the exposure and knowledge of the current state of art in their fields. Conferences provide platform of opportunities and awareness to the researchers.
It depends on the quality of conferences. Conference on more specific topics is more useful than broad one.
if conferences include good scientific content then we can believe that conferences are important but as far as the conferences are just a place for meeting friends its just a friends meeting and nothing else and its what these days we witness in conferences. poor scientific content but good hospitality
