Several studies over the past 30 years have shown that the annual direct cost of corrosion of metals to the economy of a developed country is approximately 3.1% of the country's Gross National Product (GNP). In the United States, this amounts to over 276 billion$ per year. If we add the other G8 countries, then the loss may reach one trillion $.
Polymer degradation is another story. In fact, we look for biodegradable polymers & few ones were found. There is a problem of getting rid of polymeric wastes & those who burn "or degrade" polymers, instead of recycling them, cause harm to the environment so there is a double loss of not utilizing & of hitting the ecosystem. But the loss is far less than that due to corrosion of metals.
