Dealing with a series of nodal response processes for damage identification purposes, I wonder if the estimation of statistical measures (i.e. RMS) may be useful to detect and localize the damage and/or help to reduce somehow the noise present in the data.
It is evident that each node on a structure is the sensor/actuator places. So using an efficient data acquisition points (best placement of sensors) and extract sufficient features, damage could be localized approximately. For reducing noise, you must focus on the way which structure actuated (using narrow band signal).
Statistical descriptors of the dynamic response can certainly be very useful in detecting damage in structures. Not only the variance, but also higher statistical moments could be used. To better answer your question, however, it would be useful to know: the type of structure; the number and type of sensors; the type of dynamic excitation; whether a significant nonlinear behaviour can be expected (with or without damage).
Presently I'm dealing with the data coming from an experimental campaign carried out on a masonry arch replica (1.50 m of span) subjected to statically increasing loading. The dynamic response was measured by both accelerometers and strain gauges. The sensors were evenly distributed along the edges and the middle line (11 points per line). Ambient and random impact excitations were used as inputs. The structure had a nonlinear behavior when damaging.
I understand the importance of each specific case, but I wonder if the estimation of the statistical measures mentioned above can help the damage investigation procedure regardless of the type of structure.
