Along with other statistics, FAOSTAT provides the cropland area for all countries (in 1000 ha). These estimates were used by many scholars to assess their cropland maps' quality (the closer of the reality). As far as I know, the area provided by FAOSTATS is gathered from official statistics (from the national organizations) or FAO offices.

So, my question is "can we extend the use of such estimates to the quantitative assessment of cropland maps derived from remote sensing?"

In other words, can we use these estimates to direct our classification approach to get an area closer to FAO estimates?
