How many common types of research methodology and which one is very much effective for Civil Engineering Research ( Structural and Earthquake Engineering Research)?
I believe, it is not possible to give a specific number of methodology and their impact in structural engineering because its a wide domain. So, in my opinion you have to do following steps
Select the research topic
Review relevant literature
Find the gaps/problems
Define the problem
Then ask yourself
What is the importance of working on each problems you have identified?
How it will benefit to you or others?
What is the scope of work in future?
Will you able to publish the work in good journals (Scientific impact)?
Use software help for proper file management, you can use software Mendeley for arranging literature.
You can check possible journals and their details in this website
Hi it deponds on your topics. But genrally there are some websites which you can use them through your researches. I totally use google scholar for reaching a better results in my researches. But you can use science direct or springer and even ASCE has some useful articles about our major. I hope my answer will be usefull.
hi..i strongly believe all topic is very important in civil engineering research (structural, geotechnical, earthquake, ground improvement, construction management) and all these specialized study in civil engineering can compare with human body..i.e. you cannot live without leg or you cannot live without hand..so the research for you is mainly to fulfill to your requirements. i am saying all are important..then, research methodology is separate course which mainly deals with how to formulate research problem and what are the scientific methods to be followed to get the desired objective as framed while formulating the research..ok so prefer according to your requirements..ok all the best..

Generally all of them are important. but sometimes due to some issues related to government or society, some topics receive more attentions. For example, in a country with many seismic faults, earthquake engineering or seismic analysis of structure receive more attentions.
Also, some topics do not let you work in small business project. For example, a person who monitor and detect the damage in bridges or dams (SHM), finally need to work for government or get project from government (need a big company).
Research Areas in Structural Engineering • Broadly can be classified as 1. Experimental investigation 2. Numerical finite element investigation ( Large scale Finite Element Analysis, Extreme loading like Cyclic, Seismic, Blast and Impact loading)
3. Combination of experimental and numerical investigation
Research Methodology - In general is a process leading to achieve the aims and objectives of a research topic followed by a systematic methodology adopted to achieve the aims set out. This is common for all branches of civil engineering.
If your question is which branch among the 5 categories you mentioned is important, I believe it is Civil Engineering under which umbrella each of these individual fields fall.
