I know only five species of Schistosoma but recently, I found out from a lecturer that it's more than that. I have tried searching but am not getting definite answers. I need to know how many species we have. Please help me learn
It is reported that there are over 20 species. However, there are popular five that gives infections to humans. This resource will be very helpful to you.
Based on my findings, I know only 26 species of Schistosoma but as of now, only five species infects human. These are S. haematobium, S. japonicum, S. mansoni, S. intercalatum and S. mekongi.. Amidst these five mentioned species, S. haematobium, S. japonicum and S. mansoni are the major human Schistosoma species.
According to research, there are over twenty species of Schistosoma though the remaining species are still being clarified. The three main species infecting humans are Schistosoma haematobium, S. japonicum, and S. mansoni. Under S. mansoni are S. edwardiense, S. hippotami, and S. rodhaini. Three other species, more localized geographically, are S. mekongi, S. intercalatum, and S. guineensis. There have also been a few reports of hybrid schistosomes of cattle origin (S. bovis, S. curassoni, S. mattheei) infecting humans. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
