RECIPE for PHD:
INGREDIENTS: 3 years full time work, Other resources, such as data, as needed.
METHOD: You need a minimum of 6 accepted, connected, solo papers each of a dozen pages that have been accepted for publication in respectable journals. ('Throw away' the worst paper!) The 5 papers must be ordered, updated and unified by you to make 5 tightly cohesive chapters. Add an umbrella Introduction, and a concluding Conclusion chapter, giving 7 chapters and then unify your references list. The whole must make an original, significant contribution to human knowledge. How about 5 chapters ranging from 200 to 300 pages? Or shall I say around 80,000 words?
Number of pages doesn't matter at all as long the aim of the research has been met.
