The use of humour and the use of art works are different approaches to exciting student interest in education and sometimes in the particular item being taught at any particular time. However, both approaches are not contradictory but rather have the same aim; and there are other approaches too. I do not use visual art but I regularly use humour; I however use other art forms that are not visual. I prefer humour because it can be made as brief as possible and be targeted easily to any aspect of the course I am teaching at any particular time and without veering off the track of the lesson. Also, I can easily make up humour as I go along. Using art would need more extensive preparation, which is not out of place but it would also not be as spontaneous and varied as I would love. My classes are based on spontaneity and designed to fit the nature and interests of the particular students I am teaching and the exigencies of the situation in the class as I see every class as an instance of presentation and performance (Park, Goffman). However, for the future, I shall look into the possibility of integrating art works to improve upon the visual appeal and variety of methods I am using.
