About 71% of the earth's surface is covered by the water bodies which contain huge amount of creatures. Humans are commonly concerned with fish because it is consumed almost in every part of the world. In some parts of the world, fish is an essential component of the human diet. Thousands of fish types have been identified up till now. However, the present question is about the exact number of known fish types and number of those types which are plateable and used as human food.
Over 32,000 species of fish have been described,[2] making them the most diverse group of vertebrates. In addition, there are many species of shellfish. However, only a small number of species are commonly eaten by humans.

According to FishBase, 34,300 species of fish had been described as of September 2020. That is more than the combined total of all other vertebrate species: mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds.
