I'm trying to find the duration of the initial (reversible) attachment during biofilm formation for E. coli. This information does not seem readily available. Does anyone know the answer to my question? Does this duration change with a change in the organism?
This depends on many factors, including the type of media, quantity of media, incubation temperature and other culture conditions for the same organism. And definitely vary for different genera/specie and even strains. So you have to monitor it for your strain.
In case of bacterial attachment, initial attachment can happen after 12 hours of inoculation. You need to check it through experiment. Also Azra's suggestion is great that you can follow.

And of course it will depend on the microrganism characteristics as well, including its metabolic rate so there is no universal answer but the whole maturing period may take up to weeks, depending on the system.
Actually E.coli is not bacteria of forming biofilms but it attached where it grows...as usual not take more time because that carry virulence protein on their outer membrane for this attachment..
