Air when compressed to a high degree acts as a cushion to impacts. With the right amount of pressure air can be made ideally stiff to absorb impacts and damp movements without giving jerks. This is thus useful to damp the earthquake oscillations and reduce structural damages.

It is well known in plate imapct experiments, if you don't do it in vacuum, you will observe it. The problem with compressed air is the elevation of the temperature taht can make hot spots, melting and so one.
