How is walking speed affected by the clothes you wear? I spend 30 minutes a day to get my activity tracker to record thirty “active minutes”. In my case this requires a minimum of ten minutes of uninterrupted walking at a reasonable pace; otherwise, the tracker ignores that session of walking. Very often I find that the tracker does not record any active minutes when I walk 15 minutes continuously. I guessed I was not walking fast enough in my lungi and switched to walking with track pants or shorts, and discovered that the problem was solved.

Why is this important? Probably 30 to 40 percent of the women in India wear the sari, a six-yard piece of cloth that is wrapped around. Probably 20 to 30% of the men wear lungis, dhotis, or veshtis, which are again sheets wrapped around. Does such wear reduce walking speed and ability to carry heavy things? Does it reduce the step size? Does it contribute to an increase in the accident rate the users experience? Does it make it more difficult to carry a child on a walk, or to ride a two-wheeler? Does it reduce the exercise one gets by walking a little faster and a little farther?
