When comparing desalination technologies, it is useful to use total energy equivalent from thermal to electric energy. For example, one article I recently read states that it uses a conversion factor of 30%, but that is quite arbitrary.
I would like to know if there's a more formal methodology to calculate the total energy equivalent, because I also understand that there are losses between the power plants and desalination plants due to the electrical grid losses.

We assessed the conversion efficiency of fuel to electrical power in various power generators with output capacities of 0.5 MWe to 1.5 MWe in 25+ industries and found efficiencies ranging from 25% to 40% according to the power generator design, its output capacity and its operating power.
40% is achieved by the best power generators with a capacity of at least 1 MWe and running at 80% to 100% of their capacity.
