It is a real time based assay.
In fact you can easily detect SNP by taqman assay because in the probe mix that you use for the PCR you have two primer one forward and one reverse for template amplification and two different probes. These latter are specific for the SNP and are labelled with two different dyes (FAM and VIC most commonly) which are quenced. The probe anneals to the target according to its sequence, the polymerase start to produce the template and when it finds the annealed probe it discards the probe from the template. The dye is now free from the quencer and it will give the signal.
When the SNP is heterozigous you'll expect two signals from both dye, while if it the SNP is homozygous you'll have a single signal.
The principle is the same of Real Time PCR with the exception that you have 2 probes and that you'll analyse data only at the end of the run. It is an end point analysis and not a real time. You use the same real time PCR machine and with the allelic discrimination study of the software you analyze your data.
Most of times if you are searching for known SNP there are inventoried assays, but you can design your own assay in you have a new variant or point mutation mutation.
