I teach PBL in pharmacy and the outcomes relate to a Medication Review, whereas in the discipline of medicine, the outcome of the PBL is usually related to Patient Management Review. The actual process of the PBLs prior to the final reviews are very similar.
I think problem-solving apporach can be adopted in most areas. While working for a HIV/AIDS project, we successfully used the problem solving apporach with sex workers to deal with their emotinal problems with their initmate partners and customers that impacted their safe sex behaviours, social and monetary aspects as well. The results showed that this apporach helped the sex workers deal with problems better.
Check out Barbara J. Flagg, " Experimenting with Problem-Based Learning in Constitutional Law " Washington University Journal of Law and Policy 10 (2002) . The author defines PBL and how she applied it to her Constitutional Law class. She includes an extended narrative of the motivation for her trial of PBL from her students and well as her own experience.
the university of York uses PBL in all its law curriculum and appears to be having very sound success in its approach.
I am gong to use this for my Foundation degree students ( level 4 and 5) and this seems to be an ideal use of the process lots of simulated Professional practice opportunities .
