Broadly, nanotechnology applications have pierced through different Petroleum disciplines from Drilling, Production and Processing & Refinery. Nanotechnology also strikes the stage of production enormously to enhance the oil recovery via molecular modification and manipulate the interfacial characteristics. Moreover, in a very similar fashion, it provides novel approaches to improved production processes.Its a niche area of research and much is to explore in this field.

Nanotechnology has attracted a great attention in enhancing oil and gas industry due  to more‐efficient, cost-effective, and more‐environmental friendly manner. The most advanced contribute of nanotechnology in oil  and gas industry is in area of  enhancing oil recovery(EOR). EOR techniques are receiving substantial attention worldwide as the available oil resources are declining.Nanoparticles In EOR are classified into following  :

1-Metal oxides nanoparticle,CuOs, Fe2O3,Al2O3.TiO2,MgO,SnO2,ZnO 

2- Magnetic nanoparticles, Ferro nano fluids, cobalt ferrite

3-Organic nanoparticles, carbon , carbon nanotubes

4-Inorganic nanoparticles, silica containing nanoparticles, alumina coated silica

The nanotechnology applications in petroleum and gas sector included a wide area for research. In addition to what  our friends above stated (general topics) another specific applications are  included in this area such as  :

1- Nanocoating of petroleum  storage tanks.

2- Protection of petroleum and gas transportation pipelines by cheap nanocoating.

3- Nano-gas-sensing for pollutants in petroleum industry.

4- Production of Nanocatalysts for  many catalytic reactors application in petroleum refinery.

5-  Improve the performance of drilling, exploration, EOR, and production processes and equipment in upstream industry. ..etc.

The University of Technology-Baghdad (Nanotechnology and Advanced Material Research Center) hold the 1st International Scientific Conference for Nanotechnology in Petroleum and Gas Industry 3-4 May 2017  ICNTPG2017 (for the fist time in the world).
