Because these factors can be unpredictable, the ability of sulfur to lower a soil’s pH can take several months. ou can buy sulfur at most home and garden stores. Avoid using powdered sulfur because it is too fine for acidifying soil.The increase in acidity is due to a biological reaction involving bacteria.These can be found at a garden supply center. Aluminum sulfate will change the soil pH instantly because the aluminum produces the acidity as soon as it dissolves in the soil . This compound instantly makes the soil more acidic due to a chemical reaction involving aluminum. Because of this, many amateur and small-scale gardeners prefer aluminum sulfate to organic compounds or plain sulfur. However, because it alters the pH of the soil so quickly, it can be more difficult to control the soil acidity.You can buy aluminum sulfate at most home and garden stores.

Because aluminum sulfate creates a chemical reaction in the ground, as opposed to a biological one, some farmers and gardeners are less inclined to use it over materials that produce acidity through a biological reaction.

Organic substances frequently used to reduce soil pH are peat moss, rotted manure and rotted leaf compost. It is best to plant trees adapted to the existing soil pH than to attempt to change soil pH.

your best option would be trying to develop special steem of bacteria able to remove your targeted pollutant and resiste to the acidity of landfill leachate. your approach of adding tons of sulfuric acid is not realistic economicly and not environment friendly.

I would recommend air stripping technology for ammonia reduction.

pH 9 means that the leachate contains a lot of basic radicals. The first step will be to identify the radical which is causing basicity. After its identification, we can proceed to neutrilize it.

Any method used without it will be a hit and trial and without any scientific basis.

Thanks for reply. The basic radical present in the landfill leachate is ammonia. I cannot buffer the medium to pH 7 it is very difficult. In the lab I get it with potassium phosphate bi and monobasic or sulfuric acid. However, the pH does not remain neutral for a long time. We have an anoxic treatment for ammonia, but due to the pH it is not operating very well.

Thanks for the reply. I am already developing bacteria that degrade more than 50% of ammonia at pH 9.0 but they need at least 7 days of detention in the aerobic tank, after having passed the anoxic tank.
