The coordination number has nothing to do with symmetry. You should only look at the M-O bond lengths. Probably 7 of them are shorter (how much?) then the other 3 you see. It is hard to say more without further specification. Good luck!

Whats is the chemical composition of your oxide? Many functional oxides have pseudo-cubic crystal structure where the coordination number of a metal atom is 6. Even Ti atom in TiO2 (rutile, tetragonal) structure is surrounded by 6 oxygen atoms.
