Back in the day, there was strong emphasis on the periodic table of elements. For me, I remember learning about basic chemicals such as ammonia, chlorine, and sulfur. After learning about solids, liquids, and gases, we then got to use Bunsen burners. The experiments were very simple because the teachers did not want any fires, or explosions. The last thing any teacher wanted was for anyone to get hurt. For instance, as I recall, it seems we spent a lot of time on understanding alkaline and pH balance using test strips with some access to using beakers or flasks. Of course, all learners had to wear goggles and gloves at a bare minimum. This was in the 1970's. I am not sure how chemistry is taught in middle school in this modern day and age. Thank you.
