Several measuring devices are under statutory regulation (legal metrology), such as instruments used for trade. Manufacturers are authorized in many countries in order to assess the conformity of their own products, i.e. the self-verification process.

The National Metrology Institutes are responsible for measurements that impact society, the economy, environment and other relevant aspects.

However in to decrease the interference of the state in manufacturers´ production, the self-verification process authorizes the manufacturers to assess the conformity of their own products.

Especially in the legal metrology field, where measurements affect fair competition, healthy and several other relevant aspects of the society, independence and impartiality are still issues regarding this process.

Accreditation is generally a requirement for the autorization, but is it enough?
