This is a two (2) part question specifically for but Professional please chime in. I humbly believe that no matter what the stage we are all students and constantly learn from each other.
Professor here. I belong to a number of professional organizations--mostly research-oriented ones but one more practice-oriented. All are great for keeping up with research and other developments. What I find most valuable is their communications and article links that I might not find in my focused research area. It helps broaden my horizons and knowledge base. The practice-oriented association also engages in advocacy, which I appreciate.
One of my children was until recently a membership director of a professional organization, and they provided a lot of services in exam prep, career guidance, & advocacy for the profession. I think that would be a great benefit for students and recent graduates.
Professional organizations are very important. Two of importance to me are IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) and PMI (Project Management Institute). I also just recently got involved with ISPI (International Society for Performance Improvement). Thank you!

I am really trying to gain an intrinsic view of what are your Why's behind joining and staying with professional societies or organizations. since they are costly at times to join and maintain membership.
As a STEM educator, I have a lot of mentees and students and I want to make sure I am advising them on the best tracks as well.
