Hello, I would to know how I should heat a sample in muffle furnace during determination of volatile matter content (VM): time and temperature which I need to apply.
I would to determine VM in Biomass not in a coal. I use for determiantion a muffle furnace. But I can open my furnace, when temperature deacreas below 150 degree Celsius. That is ca. 5 hours from the end of the proccess.
It will right, when i apply 550 degree of Celsius for 2 hours + ca. 5 hours of self cooling furnace ( from 550 to 150 degree Celsius) or 950 degree for 7 minutes + time od self cooling to 150 degree Celsius?
I'm worried about time the sample stays in furnace during cooling. Can it affect the VM content?
You put sample in furnace, when furnace temp. reach 950 degree centigrade, then you put your sample for 7 min. After completing 7 min sample keep out from furnace without any cooling.

take your sample in with covered crucible/laid and put in furnace for 7 min when furnace temp. reach at 950 degree. After completing 7 min sample keep out from furnace without any cooling and then cooled your sample in desiccator. weight loss of the sample represent VM content.
I using self-made furnace and protocol of European Standard EN15148-2009 ("Solid biofuels - Determination of the content of volatile matter"). Time -7 min, 900 degrees.

Take your biomass/sample in crucible covered by laid and put in furnace for 7 min when furnace temperature attend 950 degree. After 7 min, keep out your sample from furnace and placed in the desiccator for isothermal cooling. The weight loss of the sample represent VM content.
The other way is to calculate VM is to use proximate analyzer. In this instrument you placed your sample give your input condition.
