I am looking for historical data on abundance of herbs and weeds in different crops, with a focus on Europe. Since the 1950's it must have changed dramatically with most weed species eradicated from crops. In some regions crops have no undergrowth anymore (e.g. Netherlands) while other regions still have some (eastern Europe). I heard it is still unwanted but some weeds can be very persistent.
Data showing changes per crop per decade (e.g abundance of corn flowers in wheat, or what is growing in between maize plants) is important for several reasons. First I am interested in the value of crops for pollinators, which is not determined by the crop itself but by the abundance and diversity of flowers growing in between. Second, it could be an indicator for abundance and diversity of insects, which serve as food for many animals in agricultural areas such as farmland birds.
When somebody happens to know early and present studies with plant densities and or insect densities at the crop level, I would be grateful for sharing.
