COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) has significantly impacted many aspects of contemporary society. Academia has been no exception. In political science for instance, the International Political Science Association has closed its office, the 2020 Annual Convention of the International Studies Association has been cancelled, and the 2020 World Congress of the International Association for Political Science Students has been postponed to a date yet to be determined after the crisis subsides. Meanwhile, schools have been either closing or moving to only online instruction.
In the midst of all this, how has the pandemic affected your experience as an academic and what strategies have helped you cope? Is there anything you would recommend to others?
I teach math at University of Mostar, which developed clear guidelines regarding on-line teaching. We will try to switch most of our traditional teaching in next period to our SUMARUM LMS (Moodle) with support of some other tools, for example Google Meet or Hangouts Meet app (Android)...
After one week with on-line teaching almost all my students telling me that it is not as hard as they thought it would be, and in general the feedback is positive.
I am an assistant professor at the University of Economics, Prague, work as a visiting scholar at Northeastern University in Boston. Both of the institutions are doing the same as Anton Vrdoljak have already mentioned.
In Canada, the University of Ottawa and the University of Toronto are switching to all online courses for the remainder of the semester. The University of Toronto has a system where professors upload pre-recorded lectures for students to view at any time, creating a sort of digital archive for courses
I am a social researcher, and I learn from the community being one of them. For me this pandemic puts a break on my research. The participatory tools are of no use now. and the community I deal with not equipped with modern gadgets. In my case, it is very difficult.
I am also waiting for a good strategy. Trying many but not getting success.
We can also learn as teachers with students. For many teachers, online teaching has been a novelty and they needs to adapt.
There's been an update at the University of Toronto in Canada- currently the plan appears to involve preparing for many courses in the fall semester to be online, but some may have in person components in small groups or that are optional. If the situation improves midway through the semester, courses may transition to in-person
In my institute the students are being graded based on previous internal assessments. The current batch will not get a chance to shine in the exams this year I guess.
