The principle that seems to guide our institutional ethics policies is to minimise potential harm caused to sentient participants (humans, animals, and so on). Our committee consists of members from both human sciences and health sciences, so the expertise is wide-ranging and the responses fairly rigorous, with the aim (as before) of minimising potential harm. Purpose, as I understand it, is to contain possible reputational damage at individual and institutional level should unethical practices be found to have taken place (coercion, data skewing to prove a hypothesis, and so forth).
