Ashok - a useful link from Anton. The main differences of pre-print are that they are not 'officially' published. They are on RG for 'public consumption' - but scholars are less likely to read (or cite) pre-prints as they have not usually been through a peer-review process. They have also not been assigned a doi number - so they are not automatically recognised in academic databases - such as ORCID etc.
Is it the way of protection from scooping of research data generated in last 2-5 years.
