In a multicomponent distillation column with single or multiple feeds, the liquid and vapour compositions at various stages are calculated and side streams of liquid or vapour are taken out from the stages on which the concentration of the desired intermediate component is high. Do side streams affect the number of stages of a distillation column? Can the column diameter be decreased above the stage from which side stream is extracted?
Dear Amit Katyal reagarding your question, there is no definitive answer
by getting flows form the side streams you reduce the lead on each stage, this should have an impact on the diameter, leading to reducrd diameter (is enough vapor and liquid is removed)
on the other hand the number of stages is not accected diffectly be the flows(mass) but from the difficulty of the separation (composition) so you have to see if the removal of side streams has a major impact on colmposition . does it get easier to separate if you remove components from side streams? if so then you can reduce the stage number
