Dear colleague, this is a huge question and its answer is also a bit dependent on the level of analysis. I guess from an ethical perspective, much has been seen about that. To answer your question from a descriptive ethical perspective, I am afraid that altruism doesn't do a lot (although it helps). From our emprical eresearch on Pro-environmental behaviour by employees in organizations for instance, it turns out the environmental values do not significantly explain behaviour see attach 1). And also if you look at sustainable entrepreneurs, it seems to be more strategic action competence (personal engaging in being part of the solution) is explaining sustainable behaviour, rather than values like altrusm (see attach 2). I don't want to suggest that can reject altruism as explaining factor, but that we need to consider other elements as well. hope this helps.
Dear Colleague Vincent Blok, do you think that altruism towards future generations would have as a corollary the protection of the environment and biodiversity ?
Modeling intergenerational ALTRUISM is crucial to evaluate the long-term consequences of current decisions, and requires a set of principles guiding such altruism. This could to fight climate Change.....!
