I have an experiment consisting of many rounds divided into two stages and it's based on a between design. For each stage there are multiple rounds and due to learning effect subject behaviour is bound to exhibit a time trend. I guess I can use average for mean when I calculate the means, but what do I use for standard deviation when computing the effect size (eventually what I'm looking for is what is the ideal sample size)? Will greatly appreciate it if anyone can answer this question. Thanks in advance.
The effect size is the main finding of a quantitative study. In fact, an estimate of the effect size is often needed before starting the research endeavor, in order to calculate the number of subjects likely to be required to avoid a Type II, or β, error, which is the probability of concluding there is no effect when one actually exists.
You may use pooled standard deviation to calculate effect size. The following link might be useful:
