A subject may speak many languages but s/he thinks through one. Since each language expresses a specific culture, the subject's dominant language would have the most profound impact on the formation of their identity. A first generation immigrant is less likely to adopt the host identity than their offspring who grow up speaking the host language from an early age.
First, we need to understand that language, identity, and culture are interwoven. Culture is a defining feature of one’s identity while language is an entity that connects a person to his culture, and therefore language is part of culture and identity.
