Hello,
I perform material synthesis using citrate sol gel method. Aqueous solutions of acetates, boron oxide and ammonium metavanadate are used as substrates. Citric acid is used as chelating agent. There are no additional substrates, except pH stabilisers (ammonia or acetic acid).
I am curious how one can describe the process of gel formation. I have two hypotheses: 1) estrification and condensationoccurs between -OH and -COOH groups in citric acid or 2) estrification/condensation occurs between -OH in citric acid and -COOH in acetate group. Is any of those correct? If not, I would be really glad for the answer. I want to learn about citrate method, therefore I would also be very grateful for any literature sources concerning this topic.
Best regards.
