Most AFM systems use the Optical Lever or the Optical Beam Deflection measurement technique to measure probe deflection and so force. It does this by measuring the rotational deflection of the probe and so determining the vertical deflection. Therefore, it needs to know the probe length or the point along the probe it is reflecting off to determine this. Is this length simply inputted into the AFM or does it somehow determine this length between probes?
