Usually, the environment we as teachers offer our students make them take the dice of passive receivers or decision makers. The teaching and learning processes are not the sole duty of the teacher. It is a car with two main members- the teacher being the driver and the students being the passengers. The driver makes the ultimate decisions, yet, his/her driving expedition on the road would be very successful when s/he allow the passengers to partake in the decisions that s/he makes.
Similarly, a teacher has to allow the students to play active roles as decision makers in the teaching and learning processes. They must be allowed to explore, search and knock doors for answers to topics presented them as discoverers of knowledge while the teacher acts as a coach or facilitator to streamline the discovery of students in line with the objectives laid out for the lesson. However, the position of the teacher must command respect and dignity so that students do not abuse their opportunity as co-deciders of the teaching and learning processes. S/he must be very disciplined to assist students to unearth knowledge.
That notwithstanding, the teacher must allow the students to be decision makers and not passive receivers of materials who are spoon-fed like babies otherwise, they would not cultivate the desire to grow, to mature as great researchers who are prepared to take the mantle of leadership from us.
Very nice example. Letting the students to do what they like in the way they like is primarily teacher's responsibility. His classroom polices effects the role of students in class. Thank you so much dear colleague for your valuable comment.
I usually would like to allow the my students to play active roles as decision makers in the teaching and learning processes. It is very important for them.
Decision makers by students is much better in learning than passive receivers of the knowledge which presented to them, this is involved not only in theoretical lectures or practical sessions but also it is involved in the questions of the exam. In other words decision makers means: teach the students how to learn? Not only in the studying period but in future practical life. One of the limitation of the decision makers is the time factor, to teach the students how they make a decision needs more time than passive teaching.
For me I find myself more in practical session with my students because in these sessions I can achieve the active learning to them not the passive way of teaching.
Treating them as a decision makers or as a passive receivers of material? The mental framework of imparter decides the purpose of training. If the idea is to teach only without ascertaining whether they have understood and are able to apply in decision making situations, than passive training is fine.
However if the object of training is to impart skills/decision making attitudes(pro active vs Reactive etc, than treating them as decision makers and using case study model would lead to their improvement of thought process, decision making and actual decision in simulated real life case studies/ exercises,The PURPOSE OF TRAINING IS TO EQUIP THEM FOR THEIR TASKS WHICH INCLUDES DECISION MAKING IN UNCERTAINTY. Hence passive training is not utility oriented. Treating them as decision makers will boost their confidence and also adds to acceptability of the training in decision making skills.
Indeed, our students are like our children. The treatment with them is like a mother's treatment of her newborn, giving him all the tenderness and attention
Decision making skills are worth learning and it is very useful for their future personalities. Attached is a collection of suggestions of how to develop these skills.
To create students with the skills and the understanding required to compete in a dynamic and global marketplace it is important to help students to become decisions makers. For their effectiveness in the workplace they need to acquiring the competencies in critical thinking, teamwork, leadership, ethical practice, and communication.
Rising Autonomy among students is really necessary. I personally let them take their decisions and participate in discussions. I highly appreciate your valuable opinion. Thank you so much.
In addition to learning, we also look forward to their assimilating the knowledge and also applying it. hence autonomy of learning with feedback reveals whether how well the subject taught is understood. we also ascertain the extent of understanding through either case studies, quiz or questions in class and complete the same with a review of the topics taught
