First of all thanks for looking into my question.
I need to measure temperature in certain directions to get an idea of how the temperature around the fixed point is distributed. Do any of you have experience in this. What sensor is best to use for this application? What is the max distance that you can measure in a certain direction.

Depending on the application and financial issues, the best method is to use a thermal camera.
Thermocouple can be the suitable temperature sensor due to low thermal mass and small size of the thermocouple junction. The junction size can be made less than 0.5 mm by spot welding. The temperature accuracy can be a fraction of a Kelvin or less. Because of the connecting leads the maximum distance should be less than a meter or so.
