I don't think it is possible within one single document, but it is possible if you write the different chapters in separate documents with in each document a bibliography. Afterwards you can merge all the documents into one masterfile and you end up with numbered mendeley references for each chapter

I actually solved the problem after trying different things a thoudsand times.

I am using Sharelatex. I can tell you what I did.

First,you need two packages in your preamble

Then,make sure you use \include{chapter} to put in chapters into your main.tex. However,use \input{section} to put in sections into your chapter.

Finally,use command "\bibliographystyle{......}

\bibliography{.......}" in the end of each chapter.

It should work now.

a stupid way may or may not be helpful: in office word, re-paste them without original format( only keep the text in paste special ). The correlation would not exist anymore.

I have been able to use Section Breaks in between my chapters in MS Word, and this has kept my chapter bibliographies (I'm using Mendeley) contained to their corresponding chapters. I had to make sure there was a section break before my overall bibliography at all times. I also wrote my chapters in separate MS Word documents so that I could easily contain the bibliographies. Then, I cut and pasted the chapters, keeping their source formatting. So far, it's working. Hope this helps.

I also use section breaks after each chapter. However, I have a problem where within a chapter, you have a section break due to changes in page orientation (from portrait to landscape for example). Anyone with an idea how to go about that? I am using endnote

Keep the section breaks. I wasn't as clear on how I did what I did. I had separate MS Word files for eachbof my chapters. Within those files I would update everything. So, I had my intro and conclusions in one file because their bib was separate from the others; my other chapters all in separate files with their respective bibs. When I was ready to assemble. I had the section breaks where I wanted chapters to go. Then I copy/pasted each chapter & bib in between the section breaks. Once all the chapters are in, do not refresh the Mendeley bib on the whole thing, otherwise it will combine all of them together again. You have to be completely ready in your separate Word files with your bibs, then copy/paste them into the complete document. I hope this is clearer. Please message again if it wasn't.

I think you have to switch to Endnote software, Mendeley will not help in this situation even with section break. Watch this video, it might help.

if you do not have more time and it happens ; just write the second section you need it with a separated reference in a separated word file, copy and past to the main file, but do not press refresh or add new reference :) it might help. Endnote is more professional

Thank you everyone this is really helpful. I was going to try introducing the section breaks first to facilitate later editing but if the doc cannot be refreshed anyway I might just go straight for the export without references. I did wonder if Endnote could solve this but I have always been a Mendeley fan, software and model so I was not looking forward to swopping!

Hi, I'm facing the same issue writting my PhD dissertation. Furthermore, I'm trying to add the chapter number in front of each reference (thus, I want references from chapter 1 like [1.1], [1.2], refs from chapter 2 like [2.1], [2.2] etc.). I didn't find the way to add this ms word cross-reference automatically, and when I add it manually in the text, when I generate the biblyography, I get just [1], [2]...

Any idea if it's possible to do it automatically??

I am also having the same issue with Mendeley.

You have to prepare separate files and at the end, you combine them as pdf.

I wrote the different chapters in separate documents and when I got them all together did not update the references. That kept each reference in each section of chapter.

how about if you add a new reference once you merged all chapters into one file? Working with Mendeley here.... thanks
