I am flexible and understanding unless I see a lazy-bone excuses. But these students do not submit a good assignments either and they eventually get what they deserve.

In one university (I work in two for two months every year), per every day of late submission, we are recommended to deduct one GPA (e.g.  from B to B-). I seldom apply it strictly.

My wife is teaching   accounting  for  of girls community collage  in Kingdom of Saudia Arabia (KSA), I think the situation here is bit different more than 50% of students are married.Almost  every single student is lifted to the collage by her husband or brother or father that is the community rules and traditions, they have different acceptable excuses : pregnancy - divorce - thick child -  I find no boy to lift me -

 However, he knows most of her students, I think she prefer to give them inside class work and the lest possible assignments. Instead 2 mid semester exams.

Debra,  your syllabus should be very clear about your policy on late submissions.  Once that is done, you can point to your syllabus as to what is allowed and what is not.

Dear Debra, some students have developed a habit of doing things at the last minute.  To prevent late submission, I get them to prepare a 'pre-report' in class.  Then they just have to do their data collection from experiments etc, and write in their observations, discussions, results and conclusion.  This helps my students to become more focused, and they are most happy to submit their work, because we all must move to the next assignment!

We have 10 marks (out of 100) assigned for each course per semester. I give assignment topics end of lesson completion, and ask them to submit the assignment within three days of announcement. Assignments submitted within that period is taken for assessment. If a student misses the date, then they need to wait for the next lesson to be over and await the new assignment that would be announced. Again it is only 3 day period to submit. Like this i give 3 opportunities so that there is a pull towards assignment submission. To also have others continue submission of assignments, the "best of three" scores would be taken for grading.

I usually reduce marks marked for assignment for first excuse. Then for next excuse, I make it zero.

I used to enjoy the way students give their excuses for the late submission. Normally, I used to set two deadlines and ask student only the one and give then a chance to submit as early as possible once the deadline passed. As a result, I get all the assignments before the actual deadlines.

When there is an explanation and this is justified, the excuse can be taken into account. But when there is not any explanation and not justification, it is possible a sanction.

Penalties should be attached to late submissions..

The key issue in governing assignment submissions is a fair & consistently applied policy.  In the UK:
