When I start a new paper, I create a new directory in Mendeley where in insert all the necessary papers that I want to cite. However, after doing that for a number of papers, I start getting multiple entries of the same paper when I want to insert a citation in Word. That is because the same paper is included in more than one directory. And unfortunately the box for selecting the paper to cite does not provide a reference to the directory of which this particular paper is a member of. So after citing the same item in a paper multiple times, I end up getting something like

Gregor and Hevner (2013)a

Gregor and Hevner (2013)b

in my bibliography.

Is there any more elaborate way of managing the items to avoid this or do I have to merge the redundant items?
