School environment is challenging. As teachers we must help students with resilience and boost their self esteem by:
Encuraging students to understand that everyone makes mista, learning and repeating is the key
Everyone and strengths and competence, teachers must assist with maximizing student potential
Teachers mustbe clear and open in communication. Accommodate for challenges and disabilities. Give more time for assignments as long as learning is happening.
I let them experience autonomy in learning; give them chance to initiate and lead in a collaborative task. In addition, I always remind myself of Krashen's affective filter hypothesis and of the humanistic approach mantra that affective education is effective.
It is important to realize that we are born different with different levels of aptitutes in skills and intelligence. Explaining to the students the basic and fundamental truth: if we are born potato; we can only be a "very good" potato by working hard. Based on this; encourage students to compare themselves with how they were a few months ago and encourage them to improve themselves to the maximum. However tell them to NEVER compare themselves to others. It is useless and just create unnecessary stress and worries. We need nurses as much as we need doctors and God knows better than us.
Fear of failure is a powerful thing. Most people worry at least a little about making mistakes and looking foolish in front of others. Don’t let fear of mistakes and failure affect your students’ success—intervene early by framing them as learning experiences. At the beginning of the school year, ask your class, “Who feels that they’re going to make a mistake or not understand something in class this year?” Raise your own hand right away, and then start a discussion on how the fear of making mistakes can affect learning. Involve the class in problem-solving by asking what you can do as their teacher and what they can do as class members to minimize the fear of failure. Explain to your students that not understanding material is to be expected and that your role is to help them learn
Dare my opinion, as a university student, in the first instance, the basis to consolidate the self-esteem of a student, is giving to know, who has really learned something, in what way?, in practice, besides that, through interactions of Development in the area learnt, making it participate in the discussions, constructive evaluations, rather than evaluations by qualification
As most of my researches are related to this area, I feel, if I write an answer, I may make it long. So, I'm interested in following the brief and short comments of my dear colleagues.
We can enhance positive self-esteem in students by making them achievement oriented through continuous achievable triumphs.
We can make them understand that they have the potential to achieve their goal. They should start believing in themselves and keep on working their goal, no matter what challenges they may face and very soon they can turn all their dreams into reality.
- When you communicate with your students to express genuine appreciation and encouragement, they are a powerful way to promote self-esteem and flexibility. However, the focus is often on students' negative behaviors, and their positive gifts, qualities and strengths are not sufficiently nurtured or recognized.
