Personally, I always follow the great Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges's trick: read the first page and the last page. If in-between triggers your curiosity, if you think "how could the author go from first page to last page?", that's a book for you, that may offer you art of writing, yet relieved with end's anxiety. Basically I first check to see if it has any illustrations. I really hate books that are all text. Thats why I hate novels!

First of all, I check its title to find out whether irs relevant to my interest and specialization. Second, I go through the table of contents to see the titles and subtitles. I also look for its conclusion, then make a decision about buying it or not.
Actually, I read the title first. Then, i read the summary on the cover of the book. If it interests me, then, I will choose it.

I often look at the front and back cover, the tittle, and a short description of the book before I choose or buy a new book.
There is nothing like a good book to lift us out of the moments of loneliness and perhaps confusion. However, as J.D. Salinger states , the most important quality of a book is that "When you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though. " As such, the author's writing style and choice of diction is very important to me in choosing in new book.
First, it's true some books definitively find me, such as my research project, Topography and General History of Algiers. Almost science-fiction: this 1612 book on the top of it, gave me a second lecture on my own 2018 life. Second, when I feel really well in a book, I try to lower reading speed, so I can stay in a little bit longer, cursing the author for having been so stingy. Why not another chapter or even a new paragraph? At times, authors are real sadists. Pavic ironically insinuate that dependent readers should write their own book of Dictionnary of Khazars. Third, if you write a very good book doesn't mean you're a good person. I prefer not to meet my favorite writers (I'm lucky, most of them are dead).

For scientific books on Biology, I usually buy books that I would refer to in scientific papers. For other books like True Crime, I would buy if they looked interesting from the illustrations provided.
